The First World Series: Americans vs. Pirates!

Players of the first World Series, 1903. The Boston Americans are in the front row; the Pittsburgh Pirates are in the back.

The first World Series was played in 1903 between the Boston Americans  (now the Red Sox) and the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Boston winning—in an eight-game series. Since then, series of seven games have been played in all but three World Series (1919, 1920 and 1921).

The team with the most World Series wins is the New York Yankees, an American League team. The Yankees have 27 wins and also the most appearances, at 40.* In second place for the most wins are the Saint Louis Cardinals, who have won the World Series 11 times.*

The 2014 World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants, are No. 2 for the most appearances at 20. They are also No. 4 for the most wins, with 8.

In 2010, the Giants won the Series for the first time in 56 years. It was also the team’s first World Series win since moving to San Francisco from New York in 1957.

Following the 2010 win, the Giants continued to dominate, winning three World Series titles in five years.
